Flicker

Random quote of the day:

"Fundamentally, all writing is about the same thing; it's about dying, about the brief flicker of time we have here, and the frustration that it creates."

—Mordecai Richler

(Widely quoted, not so widely attributed. Thanks to someone on OWW for this—I forgot to write down who.)

Illustrated version. )

And a poem by Alexander Blok.

Okay, okay, giving into societal pressure

Wow. It's as if they know me. Personally.

What Is Your Battle Cry?

Rampaging through the mini-mall parking lot, clutching a bladed baseball bat, cometh Pjthompson! And she gives a booming scream:

"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! I plunder until my glands are satisfied!!!"

I have a novel on my hands

It's official. Venus In Transit is novelizing.

I've spent this week going back over the five chapters I'd completed (now four chapters). I realized that certain scenes needed to be rearranged, others needed to be written or expanded upon, but finally, finally I've got an opening that feels cohesive. It's not fighting itself anymore, and the book is pointed in the right direction now. More importantly, I've got that sense of it in the substrata of my consciousness.

It's still a first draft and still needs fixing, but I'm feeling pretty good about it. I can now ignore the opening and concentrate on finishing the rest of the book.

Despair will return. That seems to be an inevitable part of the novel writing process. For me and most people I know, at any rate. But right now I've got that totally groovy feeling: I'm in the groove and moving forward.

Until the whining starts again...
