Doing a quick check of www.newegg.com, I saw a laptop on their front page for $549. If all you're looking for is a word processor of sorts, then you should be able to find something relatively cheap. It's just that you won't be able to run all the bells and whistles and stuff... but it doesn't seem like you try to do that anyway.
