Eugene Smith published an entire book about what happened at Minamata. He was beaten badly for not heeding a warning to back off and continued recording the effects of mercury poisoning on the people of Minamata. He lost a huge portion of his eyesight as a result.

I read that book probably thirty years ago. It made me cry then and the memories triggered by that photo still choke me up today. Those images said it all.
