A friend and I were remarking about that photo: it should seem as if you're about to ascend to the light, but it feels more like descending into a tomb. I guess it's the impenetrable darkness all around, perhaps the greenish quality of the light on the stairs, that gives it that creepy feel.

Yeah, that's true. It's like you are leaving the light for the tunnel and looking back one last time. Why is that? The angle of the light?

Maybe because the light doesn't reach the photographer's feet it feels like the viewer is lying in wait for something as oppossed to leaving somewhere. And despite the color and light, there is a menace to it that I think is unintended.

Since the photographer named it "And the darkness that binds them all" I think he must have been thinking along the same lines.

Yeah! but ironically, this one seems to be ascending into light rather than descending into darkness. Color makes all the difference.
