I think I read that about Himmler. The thing is, most people are cool with these behaviors, but like I said, a minority of people who do them like to imply that it makes them morally superior, which is hardly the case. It's a lifestyle choice.
And yes, that neighborhood is now tragically hip—and omg, the money! Very expensive new construction and rehabs. In the early 90s I wrote an opening to my novel Shivery Bones set in the old, funky ghetto neighborhood down there that is now completely wrong. I'm going to have to set the story in the 90s if I want to keep the opening because shortly thereafter (mid-90s?) things started to go through a radical transformation. On my old block, 4th Avenue, only one family who lived there in my time still remains and their house has gone through a pricey rehab. Everything else has been torn down and rebuilt or McMansioned.
The writing is there, bubbling beneath the surface, waiting for its day. I hope it gets it, too.
