Here in California, as in many states, it's illegal to buy firecrackers, but somehow the kids in the neighborhoods always manage to have them. In my last neighborhood they always had a huge firecrackers bash across the alley from my apartment building, including a watcher on top of the garage who warned of approaching cop cars and police helicopters so everyone could hurry to cover up the evidence. The brush this time of the year is "tinder dry" so there are many firecracker-induced brush fires. For a week now we've heard the crack-crack-crackle of merriment followed by the whir of sirens. What fun. And don't go near the beaches any night for a week surrounding the Fourth on either side or you may be subjected to assault by firecracker. Oh, the innocent fun. How could a parent deny this to their child?

Here's a safe and sane firework display, although I admit not as thrilling as the real thing:
