2. Demon Forged by Meljean Brook
I have this thing I do when I'm loving a series: I rush right out and buy the next book, then I put it in the TBR pile without reading it, sometimes for months. I don't want a series that I'm having fun with to be all caught up too soon, but I want that next book to be there so when I'm really in the mood for it... So this book has been sitting in the TBR for awhile because...
I love this series. It's entertaining as hell, and Ms. Brook has a real gift for worldbuilding and creating characters you fall in-love with. Both the male and female protagonists are strong and well-rounded. This current book was a worthy entry into the Guardian series—which despite the titles of the books are about Guardians vs. Demons. The Guardians were once mortals who sacrificed themselves to save others and became a kind of proto-angel corps to watch over mankind. Very earthy proto-angels. This is paranormal romance, after all. But what I like about the series is that there's very little cheese going on here. These are solid, well-grounded characters with great backstories, and the books get better with each one.
Demon Forged is not the one I'd recommend to someone just starting out with this universe, though. There's a great deal going on here that changes the rules and takes things in a new direction. I'd recommend Demon Night or Demon Bound, my two personal favorites, to give a good feel for things. I've liked all of them, but those two are the strongest so far, I'd say—before the rules changed.
