Nice night at the Magic Castle last night. Ate very well, drank well, saw lots of shows. My friends and I tend to be much more low key than this. Not used to all the high-tone folks that were in attendance (or the high-tone wannabes), but it's a fascinating place. We went to the unfashionably early 6 p.m. feeding--and I'm glad. It meant we got to have a nice, leisurely dinner then take in some shows before the place got unbearably crowded about 9:30-10p. We saw John Carney and Tina Lennert put on the big show--a rather intellectual show for the drunken Saturday night crowd, but we all liked it very much. And we saw Rich Colley (sp?) doing amazing card tricks up close. He was a street performer in Philly for 15 years, so he has a great patter going with the audience. Very funny. We saw some other folks because there are magicians all over the place, sitting at tables, at the bars, wherever, just doing schtick. Fun. But I couldn't help thinking that the fire marshall might have something to say about how crowded the joint was in the later part of the evening.

There was one point of claustrophobia when we were in the little room where the Ghost Of Irma (an invisible player) plays piano and takes requests. Irma was good on the ivories and when asked a question, replied in song. Like, "How are you tonight, Irma?" Life is just a bowl of cherries... Someone asked for Moonlight Sonata, which Irma played, and then someone else said, "I guess Irma's in a somber mood tonight," so she launched into some Scott Joplin rags. And etc. So, anyway, we're listening to Irma and at one point people started streaming into this room--probably no more than 20 feet in diameter and it was getting kind of hard to breathe, so I pushed my way out. We retreated to one of the (numerous) bars at the top of the stairs that's away from everything to catch our breath. But that was really the only downside.

Being such a wild and crazy party animal, I was in bed by midnight, so consequently did not turn into a pumpkin. Too much prime rib and red wine, methinks. That's my excuse, anyway.

I need a nap.
