Dad
Was he the man who stumbled sodden
across the heaving floor, tripping
over profanities, then shouting them
down the long halls of my consciousness
before sinking through the door
and out into the tyranny of night?
Or was he the man who held me high
upon his shoulder, pointing
at the golden points in a different night,
breathing in my joy and wonder,
exclaiming triumphantly, "Stars! Stars!"
