I used to think I was good at identifying obscure actors, and my dad was good at it, too. Then one night we were watching some old movie and my mother (who is generally not so good at it) insisted this one guy was Richard Carlson and my dad and I heaped much scorn on her and we went round and round until the credits rolled (back in the day when you could actually read the credits). Yep, it was Richard Carlson. We never lived it down, and to this day when any argument comes up about actors, my mom still says, "It must Richard Carlson."

We have a similar story in our family. One night my dad was flipping channels (like dads do) and ran across an ad with someone he insisted he knew, but couldn't remember the guy's name. I didn't know the dude from a hole in the ground (this was years before the movie obsession kicked in and also years before the internets) and my mom wasn't much help either.

After much angsting and swearing, my dad finally remembered that it was Lawrence (Larry) Dobkin. He turned to me and said "Never forget that. It will be on the test."

I never did.

About a month ago, my parents were watching an episode of some old TV western and there he was. Neither could remember his name. My mom suggested that my dad call me.

My phone rings. Dad says, "The guy you're not supposed to forg--"

"Lawrence Dobkin."

"Thank you." Click.

Lawrence Dobkin is now our default character actor. ;)
