Random quote of the day:

“It is more honest to confess at once how little I am touched by the desire of accuracy. This is no furniture for the scholar’s library, but a book for the winter evening school-room when tasks are over and the hour for bed draws near . . ."

—Robert Louis Stevenson, from the dedication for Kidnapped

Kidnapped is an odd little story. It has some great period scenes (period for the 1880s, not the 1750s, but still...of the pre-automotive age) and one of my favorite expressions-- "ye're a man of small contrivance"-- but it seems to end more or less with a THUNK.

Just by the way, kind of on that subject, you might enjoy Marjorie Plant's "The Domestic Life of Scotland in the Eighteenth Century" (1952)-- quite well written, and fascinating.
