Solitude is one of my very best friends.

Yep. It's a wonderful luxury sometimes in my life as currently constituted, but something I find myself craving and relishing when I have it.

I have a different translation of the same quote in my little book of recipes, poems, and other items, which I made when I was eighteen.

(I have it as, "It is better to sit alone than in the company of evil")

:-)

That picture is entitled "solitude," but it could also be entitled "multitude"

I'm sure this is one of those quotes that could be interpreted many ways. That's translation for you. :-D

And yes about the multitude. She's only missing other humans.

This should be drilled into the brain of every girl child from birth.

Yes. Fear of being alone is much worse than actually being alone. In fact, living alone can be really quite cool. I really miss it sometimes.

I never got far in the book Eat, Pray, Love (way too twerpy) because early on she said something to the effect of "I was 32 [or whatever] and I had never lived alone." I wrote in the margin, "There's your problem right there," and put the book down.
