Rest in peace, Beth Short
Jan. 15th, 2007 09:09 amSixty years ago today you became the Black Dahlia.
You were misjudged, lied about, exploited, humiliated, betrayed: a case study in blaming the victim for her victimization. You were not a hooker, nor even a "man-crazy tramp," you were just a kid, lost and drifting like so many kids after the Great War, and many kids since, looking for love and a sense of belonging. You most certainly did not deserve what happened—nobody deserves that, especially not the sad, dreamy, lost girl you were.
Your story breaks my heart, but I hope you're long beyond the heartbreak, the hustle, the wandering and lost spirit years. I hope you've finally found a place to belong.
Rest in peace.
