Cover my cover

Picture this: a long shot of a carnival, all brightly lit against the darkness, glowing in the background. A tall, well-built man with auburn hair stands in the foreground with his back to "the camera." He wears a white 30s-vintage shirt and black gaberdine pants with suspenders. Perhaps he wears a bowler hat, perhaps a fedora. In one hand, he holds a hammer; in the other, he holds a rose. No wait, he holds the hammer and the rose in the same hand. Then what's the other hand doing? And a bowler? Seriously? Fedoras? Aren't those too Indiana Jones? Oh wait, this is a period piece set in the 30s? Maybe that might make a difference...

I'm not actually going to talk about anything in the comments, but I had to pick something to see the results thus far. :)

Definitely no fedora, and no need for a bowler. If a hammer and a rose must be involved, having them both in one hand is far more intriguing than having them in separate hands.

Having him hold a necklace, though, might be eye-catching.

But there weren't any necklaces in Blood Geek... :-D Lisa's doing a cover for me.

Yeah, I was afraid that was the case... quick write a scene where he gives her one. ;-)

Mabye have him hold a cowbell? ;-)

Ha! That would certainly be interesting...

You don't like the rose, huh? He calls Susan a rose quite a bit, and loves her rose perfume...Or is it the hammer you object to?

The rose just seems... kind of generic to me. A rose can be given to anyone by anyone, for any reason. A tomb, a parent, a friend. But something like a necklace makes em wonder if the guy stole, or is he planning to give it? Is it magical? Does it have a special meaning? Why is he holding it like that in the middle of a field? Did the giving of it go wrong?

It just brings up much more curiosity, which in turn makes em more likely to read the book. The hammer could be pretty interesting, too, but I have a feeling whetever is in teh second hand will be somewhat overlooked because of our natural tendency to notice and attach more importance to what would be in the first, or closest, hand.
