pjthompson: poll ya (riddler)
[personal profile] pjthompson
I'm going mostly for performers who started out in the 1960s, although some of these had careers that lasted (and have lasted) much longer. Some of these are pretty obscure, others were huge in their day. It is by no means a comprehensive list.

You don't have to answer the age question, below (or any of them, really), but I am trying to get a sense of the demographics. It's an over 30/under 30 question, no specific ages required. And I'm sorry for lumping the geography into such large areas, but this poll was getting freakishly long.

Heard of everyone there except The Walker Brothers, but this really is my forte. *g*

I'd add to the list, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, Steppenwolf, The Velvet Underground.

All great suggestions!

And yes, this is your forte, so I'm not surprised.

The Walker Brothers were an American group who made hardly a ripple here in the states but became a big hit in 60s England. "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" was their big hit.

And once I read what their song was, I knew the band. There are lots of bands out there where I've forgotten the group's name, but I instantly recognize the music.

I fell in love with that song and never forgot it, but there are tons of groups where I recognize the music but don't know the name.

What he said. To the T. But you included Janis, Jimi, and Arlo which means you've neglected single-name acts like Dusty Springfield, Donovan and Bob Dylan.

And I'd have to throw in T. Rex, just because... which can be cancelled out on the weirdness quotient by Peter, Paul, and Mary.

And if you have the Stones and Pink Floyd, then you can't ignore Jethro Tull and David Bowie. No, sir, you can't!

It was a rich decade, no doubt about it.

BUT the list was getting freakishly long...As I said, I may have to do a supplemental list. :-)

And I actually did think of Dusty and David after I'd posted, and the Animals, who had some classic songs, and the Turtles, and the Zombies, and Mungo Jerry...You see, the possible additions are endless. It was a rich decade.

Mungo Jerry? Please tell me there's also a Rumpole Teaser!

There was no mention of The Kinks.

I've put "other" because no way did the UK view itself as part of Europe at the time.

The Kinks would be a great addition.

They're a classic group. But space precluded this being a comprehensive list. :-)

You didn't forget my favorite(s), but I couldn't find the "all of them" button and this phone makes button-ticking tricky.

I am appalled that there are people in the world who've never heard of Procol Harum. Appalled.

Dude, this whole thing was started by a 28-year-old who'd never heard of the Doors.

I KNOW! And this is a very smart young guy. I said, "They made a movie about them!" He just shook his head and looked apologetic.

Oh, and dude, if I wasn't too young to have experienced such a thing I might have actually been to a Procol Harum concert at the Santa Monica Civic which may have been an amazing experience. But, alas, being as young as I am, I can only dream of such things.

Ah well. Perhaps someday, some older person will tell you how it was. ;)

That would be good of them.

Also, about how 45 years ago last Sunday they'd seen the Beatles at Dodger Stadium. When they were like, seven, or something. :-)

Have you ever heard of the Strawbs? I had not, until I lived in England. They had a very Byrds-y feel to them.

Date: 2011-08-30 09:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pjthompson.livejournal.com
Yes, I've heard of them, but I'm not sure I've ever heard them. I'll have to investigate.

Try "Lay Down"

It's the one I heard once in England and loved so much that I held it in my memory until iTunes was invented and I could buy it as a single track <3

Very nice! I see what you mean about them being Byrdsish.

I had a number of those I held in my head until iTunes was invented. I still haven't manage to collect them all.

Pam...how could you have left out Boingo? Seriously, The Mystic Knights of The Oingo Boingo belong on this list.

And The Troggs...and Paul Revere and the Raiders.

I might know waaay too many music groups. Way too many. I also know how to dance The Freddie, which might make me officially old.

From: [identity profile] pjthompson.livejournal.com
Dude! It's a sixties list. Did Boingo go back that far??? O, woe is me.

And yes, the Troggs and PR&TR. I almost put them (PR&TR) on, but thought better of it because the list was getting too long. Clearly, I'm going to have to do a supplemental poll with all these great suggestions.

And, ahem, I may have even danced the Freddie myself. Which, as you say...

Boingo started in 1972, so I'm a little too far ahead. The end of the 60s and beginning of the 70s all blur together for me. *g*

I did manage to see them 2 or 3 times in the Elfman years at Madame Wong's.

It was said of my generation that we were historically aware if we knew that Paul McCarthy belonged to another band before Wings.

Ha! Yes, that's a good thing to know. Not everyone I've talked to this week is "into history," sadly.

I'm 36 if it makes any difference... (and I adore a lot of 30's 40's and 50's music too)

I love music from all decades. I was having a convo with a 28-year-old who's very smart and he'd never heard of the Doors and I was wondering if that was typical.

The very first rock album I owned was Jimi Hendrix, "Electric Ladyland." I was 11 years old, and he was still alive.

After that start, for me the rest of rock music has sometimes seemed good, but almost always tame.

I remember when Jimi was still alive, too. And Janis. The 60s was so rich.

Well, over 30 is hardly old. Over 40 gets into a gray area, over 50...let's not talk about...
