It is the way of things that wisdom, or at the very least, experience takes the place of the wonder and newness of everything. Each has its benefits and detriments. As you say, a balance is best. Have you ever seen the film "Pleasantville"? I think that one could argue that the black and white portion of the film is the child's eye version of life.
