I nearly checked "reading history and adapting it to suit my purposes" except that I try not to adapt it - the actuality is more fascinating than anything I can make up! Mostly I've come across something in history or archaeology and wonder "What did happen?"
Yes, but with recognisable history, one must observe certain criteria, such as maintaining a certain percentage of historical accuracy, and filling out the appropriate forms to apply for a creative license, otherwise the RSPCH comes down on you hard.
That's definitely true, and something I dread when dealing with history. Which is why it's much more fun to transplant it to an alternate universe, et al., in which you can have your way with it.
