Random quote of the day:

"I don't believe any of you have ever read Paradise Lost, and you don't want to. That's something that you just want to take on trust. It's a classic…something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read."

—Mark Twain, speech, "The Disappearance of Literature," November 20, 1900

(Having been forced to read it for my major, I have to agree with Twain. I know that makes me shallow, but I can live with that.)

I liked it: let it profit thee to have heard,
By terrible example, the reward
of disobedience. Firm they might have stood,
Yet fell. Remember, and fear to transgress.

I think we dealt with it before starting A levels. We read part of it in class, the teacher gave us a summary of the rest and left it up to us how much more we read; it didn't come into any exams, but she said "it's a good thing to know what's in it and to have the option".. I read more than most but didn't finish it because I found the verse form so turgid.

Yes, it was pretty turgid. I had to force myself to little a certain set amount each day just to get through it.
