A literal rat race: two competitors chasing each other across the eaves of the porch. Rats endemic to most L.A. neighborhoods, even nice 1s.

There’s a research assistant here that sounds uncannily like Tobey Maguire. I want to say, “Spidey, is that you?”

The sleek young mother in the park with the ponytail halfway down her back bouncing her toddler on her knee while he laughed and looked.

He looked quite dapper in his navy and gray striped jumpsuit. I don’t know why I assumed he was male, I just did.

If a cat barfs in an out of the way place that no one will see or step on, do you still have to clean it up? A purely rhetorical question.

I used to have an encyclopedic memory & now it’s complete dreck. Ou sont les nieges downtown?

The irony is not lost on me: my bookmark for The Yiddish Policemen’s Union is my CWA membership card.

I haven’t been union for years but am proud I once was.

Never meet the eye of the little old lady in the cat food aisle unless you want a half hour conversation about her poobers. 1/2

I expect to be that lady someday soon but for now I’m keeping my head down.

Global warming is a fact, but I sometimes think even scientists occasionally fall prey to millennialism. Millennialism is also a fact.

So, are “scientific” predictions of the end to be taken more seriously than loony Mayan predictions?

Ou sont les nieges downtown? :D

Global warming is a fact, but I sometimes think even scientists occasionally fall prey to millennialism. Millennialism is also a fact. YES! YES THIS IS TRUE.

... and So, are “scientific” predictions of the end to be taken more seriously than loony Mayan predictions?

I've decided we don't need to care. The only thing for it is to love and cherish each other and the world around us, and to try to treat each other and the world around us well. As for the rest, what can we do? GUYS GUYS GIANT METEOR GLOBAL WARMING NUCLEAR WINTER PEAK OIL OVERPOPULATION HORMONE DISRUPTORS SARS MAD COW DESERTIFICATION!

It's not that those things aren't true but what really can you do? Except listen patiently to the lady in the catfood aisle, because if the meteor's going to hit just now, she probably needs someone to be a warm and reassuring face before it all goes dark, you know?

.... yeeeeahhh.... this cheerful thought brought to you courtesy of I'm -not-sure-what. I think I should go self medicate with a gin and tonic...

lol--gin and tonics are always a nice idea, but I agree with everything you said. My attitude about the predictions is very similar to yours: yeah, take it seriously, do what little piddling things I can to help the situation out (not much), and cherish what we have. Also a good point about the little old lady.

Having said that, I do think scientists fall prone to the same societal forces as everyone else, including the doom and gloom of millennialism. So we'll just have to wait and see, won't we? :-)

How about if one cannot FIND said barf? Does it mean there is actually NO barf to clean?

I think you're right. If a cat barfs in the forest--or some vast complex of table legs and boxes, for instance--perhaps it doesn't really exist! Yes. I think you're onto something there.
