lol--but funnily enough, I had an Irish setter whose greatest wish in life was to be a lap dog. She'd climb into your lap and--oof! We'd let her stay there until our body went numb or we could no longer breathe because she was the sweetest, gentlest creature. And she had a ton of soul. Must be something about the Irish breeds. ;-)

Not to outdo, but I spent a weekend in a strange dilapidated old house owned by a woman who had THREE of them, and they ALL thought they were lapdogs. It seems that she'd let them sit in her lap when pups and then never trained them to get down!

rofl--that's really funny. We got Tillie as a grown rescue dog, so I can't say that's what happened with her, but I wouldn't be surprised. She was such a sweetie.

I love Irish Wolfhounds. At the dog shows I've been to, they've been a sea of calm, often with a toddler or two sleeping on their bellies.

A huge contrast to the Belgian Shepherd Dogs that I came there for. ;)

I've always fantasized about having one, but you need lots of space for them to run, et al. Not a city dog, I don't think.

What is stopping me is the short lifespan, plus... well, I have to admit that I've gotten used to the speed and intensity of the Belgian Shepherd Dogs, which drives most other dog people crazy. :p

Wolfhounds don't live long, huh? Our setter didn't live long, either (10). Very sad.

Yeah, it's sad. When I was considering the Irish Wolfhounds, the average lifespan was around 7 years old, and it was just not something I could commit to. In comparison the European lines of Belgian Shepherd Dogs usually live 12-15 years, so double that of an Irish Wolfhound.
