I Mary Sue without trying, without desiring it, and have to get it out of there before I can let anyone read it. It's really fucking annoying.

Whole careers have been built on Mary Sue. I think sometimes writing is a question of sanding the worst offense down so they don't stick out so much. ;-)

I ticked "other" for "people I know" because it's complicated: sometimes I incorporate aspects, or combine people. If I do base something definitely on someone I know, I check with them (see my latest post on my own lj!)

Yes, my experience is not as absolutist as my poll answers, too. I never take a person wholecloth, but I may take bits here and there. I'll never tell which and when, though!

My characters are in control of the story, I'm afraid. I like to pretend I am, but I think we all know better.

I used to base characters on my friends, but... no one would believe one group of people could be that dark and sarcastic. :-)
