I don't know where the quote is from, and I feel like context may make my response incorrect but.

It's from a good but odd novel and, yes, that's pretty much the message. The city of the dead in question is New Orleans.

I mean, there are situations where there's no way out, and no one will save you. I'm lucky enough to be a middle class Westerner, so I'm unlikely to get into those situations, but it's not impossible even for me. And for those in Iran, or China - sometimes the only escape is death.

So I hesitated to say that you can save yourself, because there are stories where you can't.

Absolutely. In a spiritual sense, in the sense of addiction and the like, people can get help. Ultimately, however, only they can save themselves. In a situation—in any country—where you are surrounded by violence or bureaucratic toxicity, there often aren't good options.

Some people can find escape from violence etc. in their minds, but it's anathema to who I am as a person right now.
