To the extent that I have a mental illness, I see his point. To the extent that I am empowered to leave toxic situations, I disagree vehemently.

I agree that happiness is often a by-product—of doing what we love, of being with people who empower us, etc. I don't have quite as bleak an outlook as he does, because I do believe happiness is achievable. I just don't think it's a steady state. I don't think we can get to a place/situation/whatever and be happy for the rest of our lives. It's always going to be pearls of happiness strung on a string with many spacers in between. But the pearls do exist. What we choose to surround ourselves with can give them to us.

I believe it's something to aspire to, as well. One shouldn't give up on finding a pearl.
