Yep. I think too often we writers are concerned with hurting the feelings of family and friends, but as the lady said...

I was quite upset when my sibling started talking about my work and I realized they'd been reading it and not commenting. But they didn't seem to notice which character was them, so I more or less got away with it.

Still upset though. But there's a reason they were that character.

I think often people don't see themselves in the characters they may have inspired, or they see themselves in a character that has nothing to do with them. And unfortunately, if you make your stuff available publicly you lose all control over who sees it. That's part of the necessary letting go process. Now, if they were sneaking in and reading them on your computer or your notebook that's a completely different thing. That's a total violation.

It was on ao3, but who reads a multi chapter fic without commenting even once or leaving a kudo unless they're a jerk or being sneaky.
