One thing I've done that you probably haven't:

1. Had a conversation with Gary Busey in a bookstore about Thomas Jefferson. I was researching; he wanted to play him. He recommended some books I should read. He was actually sane and articulate.

whoa. And yet, I think he would make a good Thomas Jefferson. How long ago was this?

Yeah, I think he would have made a great Jefferson. Nick Nolte wound up playing him. This was right after I visited Monticello, so it must have been '89 or '90. I'd been reading about Sally Hemmings before we went to Monticello and I noted that they never mentioned her during the tour (although I bought Fawn Brody's book in their bookstore). I've wondered since if they've amended the spiel since the DNA results proved he did father her children.

Thanks. It was a cool conversation. And it's made me realize that his persona in "I'm with Busey" is as much a performance and as a tale of ex-druggie burnout. (I mean, I know he's a druggie and a little crazy, but that's not all there is to him.)
