The misunderstanding option works by way of a let-it-go when I was also a total fricking jerk.

(I'm not sure a puppy email would be entirely sufficient. But in most normal situations, it'd go a long way.)

When is a lame duck not a lame duck? When he/she/it's a goose!

I don't understand why there's any option for the first question. Surely bloodletting is all that's necessary. Reasonable minds could not disagree on this point.

When is a lame duck not a lame duck?

When he's the Son of Satan.

The first one-- the apology-- without "I'll never do it again." Never being a jerk again is beyond the abilities of any of us mere mortals, and I'd think something was pretty wrong with the S.O. or with the relationship if it were promised.

I wasn't accusing you of thinking you weren't one of us mere mortals, by the way. Just thought I should clarify. :-)

Under "other", as a significant apology, I'd have to go for "huge alimony check". ;)

My 'other' for the second question is "When Congress still acts like he has clout."

I think you're right in regard to the House, but the 'pubs in the Senate are still falling in line as asked. That makes me question their collective intellect.

The Armed Forces thing definitely scares the crap out of me. I've never thought I'd actually look forward to a coup if necessary...
