Lo, there was peace in the land
Feb. 19th, 2007 12:43 pmWe have these neighbors who live over the back fence and down a little. They love to have loud—very loud—and drunken outdoor parties. Since most of the weekend was sunny and warm, summerlike, and today was a holiday for most of the world, they decided last night was a good night to boogie down. They've been asked to keep it down after ten or take it inside because the woman who lives right next door is seriously ill and needs the sleep, and because most of the rest of us just don't want to listen to it, but these are seriously selfish people. The cops can't be called until midnight, and the cops have been called in the past. I think at this point their partying is at least partially defiance.
Also, not everyone has today off. I'm probably the only M-F 8-5er working today, or it seems like, so I was laying there at eleven last night listening to the hilarity across the fence and trying to ignore it. Then...
Lo! The rain, it falleth from Heaven! A great lamentation went up, and the multitude did eeketh and shrieketh. The sound of many feet scrambling was heard in the land, and the sliding glass doors did clunketh shut. A peace that surpasseth all descended upon the land.
And lo, I did laugheth myself to sleep.
Random quote of the day:
"Freedom of religion is not just to practice the religion of your own, but the freedom and decency to respect someone else's desire. By the way, the tips were very good."
—William B. Helmreich, professor of the sociology of religion, speaking of Jews who choose to work on Christmas, The New York Times, December 22, 2003
