LOVE Grace Hopper! I heard her lecture once. She distributed nanoseconds. She said she had problems visualising them, so she went round and nagged someone to tell her how far an electric impulse would go in a nanosecond, then cut up pieces of wiring at that distance and distributed them.
I also loved her take on getting equipment, aka "liberating":
"First of all, liberate it from the Air Force. They've got everything. Next, liberagte it from the Army. They've got nearly everything, and they can't count. Don't try to liberate it from the Marines or the CBs: they liberated it in the first place."
And I particularly cherished her account of getting equipment etc in the Pentagon. She crossed the line and liberated a coffee table from political territory. She found herself on the carpet. Finger down seam of trousers, she said, "Sir, it was not bolted down."
She used to turn up accompanied by everybody associated with her. She said it was giving credit where credit was due. I personally thought that my (late) husband was right: she was turning up with her meisnie.
She sounds like she's a hoot. My dad, the Marine, used to tell about "midnight requisition" raids he and his buddies used to go on during the war. Very amusing.
