Unfinished except in my heart (mostly)
Jul. 3rd, 2008 03:09 pmThat novel meme.
I'm just going to list the ones I've actually done some work on (as opposed to being a collection of "things" in an idea folder).
933 Cherokee Street - Actually, interesting characters and quite a good idea, despite all the kinky sex magic. I may have to finish this one some day if I can come up with sufficient plot to go with the trappings.
Brother Wolf, formerly A Taste of Night before Vicki Petersson, and also briefly Rough Magic - I was about 70k into this one before it went belly up. Nearly broke my heart. The plot got way stupid, even for me, spies and memory experiments and omg. But I loved the two main characters. I hope I learn how to fix it some day. I tried briefly to turn it into a werewolf novel, but omg even stupider.
Beneath a Hollow Moon - The long-awaited JK Montmorency/Dos Lunas novel. Okay, so maybe nobody's waiting for it except me. I have a frame to hang the story on, good characters, a number of preparatory short stories, but it's just not coming together.
Blood Boogie - Sequel to Blood Geek, my much unsold first vampire book. I don't think this one's going to go any place, though the opening scene was pretty cool. I might have to steal it for another project.
Burn - I've got an interesting premise, a good MC, interesting worldbuilding, a good beginning and end. It lacks a middle (a big chunk of middle), and I wonder if there's even enough story there for a full novel. It may turn out to be a novella in disguise.
Midnight Ragas - The third book in the vampire trilogy I didn't realize was a vampire trilogy until I'd written a 170k first draft trying to cram all three stories into one. (Night Warrior/The Making Blood is book one and one-third of this trilogy, for which I have shaved off the one-third and dumped it into this story.) I have no idea if I'll get back to this as I've totally gone off vampires.
A Little Bag of Dreams - An early attempt at urban fantasy with a heroine, but, alas, not a kickass heroine, and with way too much metaphor. I was thinking about parts of this just the other day, so maybe it isn't completely moribund. Part comedy, part serious stuff, part pretentious and too self-aware stuff. It would have to be seriously altered.
Red Demon - I really like this one. It's been one of my "maybe I'll work on that next" books for awhile. I might be able to cannibalize parts of A Little Bag of Dreams for this one.
The Ice Wizard - Dude does high fantasy. An early effort and probably best forgotten, but you never know. I would hate to waste all the effort I put into those damned maps. ;-)
The Simon Jellicoe Novel - A sequel or broadening out of my novella, "Sealed With A Curse" about an 18th c. cunning man's adventures across the 8th dimension...and beyond! This is another one I've really wanted to get to.
Venus In Transit - Currently pushing forward on this. A contemporary mostly comedic fantasy set in Dos Lunas County. I started this one back in 2000 and got well into it before it fell apart in my hands. But I finally figured out how to fix it and so far it's going really well and I'm enjoying all-heck out of it. Which is why I say no novel is ever completely dead because you just never know. I've finished some that have stayed moribund for years.
