We just had a 5.8 earthquake

That was way too much excitement for me. That big is hard to be blase about.


ETA: I'm okay, the loved ones are okay. No damage here or at home, just lots of heart-pumpin' going on. It went on forever it seemed like, but it appears that it didn't do much damage overall. Already ABC7 is revising it downward to a 5.4, but it was a real good shake. Chino Hills, the epicenter, is 45 miles due east of here (Santa Monica) so we got a real good taste of it. We're all back to nervous joking stage now. ;-/

If you're that close to the epicenter and the quake was shallow, 5.4 will feel like a 5.8. That will get your heart pumping.

I never stressed over earthquakes, but the longer I'm away the more I find I don't miss them at all. The best part of having earthquake stories to tell is watching life-long mid-westerners turn green. *g*

I know! It's a hoot and a half. And these are the same folks who are blase about tornadoes. The devil you know...

As to the shaker, they don't usually bother me that much, but this one was rather intense. The shock hit and went on for a long time then it seemed to taper off then kick up again. That's when my heart really started pumping.

An earthquake would scare me sh..less. On the other hand tornadoes are a seasonal nuisance. They are more like a lightening strike in that they select one particular unlucky area. We had a funnel cloud form overhead two days back but it didn't touch down. Perhaps that is where the blase comes into it. Earthquakes on the other hand immediately affect all around the epicenter. Now that is scary.

You know, you can get used to just about anything. I've lived with earthquakes all my life. I don't mean to put up a false bravado here. They are scary, but you just learn to live with it.

Very glad to hear you're alright -- I just saw that on the news (the earthquake, not that you were alright).

At what point do you start to get nervous about those things? I never know whether a 5 is bad and 4 is okay, or what.

Anything under a four doesn't usually freak me unless I'm sitting right on top of it--haha. Between 4 and 5 is several magnitudes greater and it's a good shaking, but not terrifying. Over 5, on the other hand, is a pretty damned good shaking. This one was long, and that's most disconcerting of all, when it seems like it's going to last forever, starts and stops.

i heard 20 aftershocks... that'd have me yelling, "Make up your damn mind!"

As of last night there had been over 50, but most of those are so mild you don't feel them. Aftershocks can be...disconcerting. :-) They usually diminish markedly after the first 24 hours. Unless what we had yesterday was just a foreshock for something bigger. That kind nags at the back of one's mind.
