There is no dog but dog

Random quote of the day:
"A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down."
—Robert Benchley, “Your Boy and His Dog,” Chips Off the Old Benchley
(Thanks to
hominysnark for this quote.)

I'd just like to state for the record that in my years as an image searcher I have found few subjects with more mawkishly sentimental pictures than that of "A boy and his dog." Just sayin'.
Disclaimer: The views expressed in this random quote of the day do not necessarily reflect the views of the poster, her immediate family, Siegfried and Roy, Leonard Maltin, or the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They do, however, sometimes reflect the views of the Cottingley Fairies.

One of the pleasures of serendipity when researching 5th century Burgundians was discovering the penalty for stealing a dog. Unlike most offences, it wasn't a fine; the thief had to kiss the dog's arse. I've incorporated it into my novel, with the dog looking very pleased at a human behaving sensibly for a change.
