I fully expected the Proposition 8/gay marriage decision would come down the way it did, but I'm still terribly disappointed and ashamed of my state. At least they let the 18,000 marriages that already happened stand, but that still crushes the rights of millions of others. It's wrong and wrong-headed and completely illogical. Basic human decency demands a change.

Gay marriage does not take away the rights of men and a women to marry each other.

Gay marriage does not force anyone to marry the same sex.

Gay marriage does not impose upon the sanctity of religious marriages. Your ceremonies remain the same even regardless of the civil ceremonies. Besides, the way most heterosexuals practice "the sanctity of marriage" has turned the phrase into something of an ironical statement.

The fight continues.

The important thing to keep in mind is that the decision actually had nothing to do with gay marriage itself, but the process by which it was made illegal. It can be tough to see at times, but there's a huge difference. (As you know I'm all for anyone marrying anyone, but I would much rather see this come about through due process, even with setbacks, than by a judge overreaching on a case's merits, which would have been the case here. I like results like Conn. (or was it NH?) and Iowa where those against marriage have no case for arguing it goes against the will of the voters or their representatives.)

I do realize this was a legal decision not a "issue" decision. It's just so ludicrous to deny any group their rights based on the cultural assumptions of some other group. I realize it's got to work it's way up to the next level and all the way to the top, but it's just infuriating.
