Overheard at my house

"See, he's saying 'hello,' " says the roommate.
"He is not. He's barking like that little yappy dog next door," says I.
"He's not! Listen. He's saying, 'her-ro.' "
"No, 'hrwow wow!' "

I suppose the wonder is not that the bird speaks plainly, but that he speaks at all.

We spent Thanksgiving at my Aunt's house and their parrot mewed like a cat whenever it wasn't screeching like a banshee at decibels unfit for human ears. I don't imagine I could live with a bird like that...but one that talks? That sounds cool!

He's a funny boy. He's a starling, which are related to mynah birds, so he's more of a chatterer than a screecher. He does like whistling: wolf whistles and the opening to Blue Danube are his favorites. He's lots of fun.
