pjthompsonThe roommate and I decided to take a short drive up Pacific Coast Highway to Patrick's Roadhouse, a local joint with superb food. Simple fare, but everything is fresh, from scratch, and done with love, from the clam chowder to the stupendous burgers to the banana cream pie. The fries—well, you dream of skinny fries this good, my friends. I had the fish and chips today, and the beer batter was so light and crispy! God, am I in pain. (Because we also had the clam chowder and the banana cream pie.) (Not on the eating program.)
I had no idea it was considered a celebrity hangout. Some of us buzz down there for lunch from work sometimes, and it wasn't until I got online looking for a link that I saw anyone famous associated with the place. (I strongly disagree with one site's assessment of "mediocre food." It isn't hoity toity and pretentious food, but it's great.) I think maybe I like it slightly less knowing that Hollywood types sometimes go there (I avoid those places, especially if the Governator has been there), but not enough to stay away. Besides, it doesn't make the most of The Biz connections. It isn't one of those joints who put autographed pictures of the stars on the wall to make itself seem more than it is. Make no mistake: it is a joint, and funky, but fun. The food is the real star here.
I didn't set out to write a restaurant review, but I'm wallowing in the yumminess at the moment. It had started to rain by the time we left. A really big storm is supposed to hit this evening. It's plenty cold. For L.A. I'm going to spend the rest of the day digesting in peace.
Only two more days of vacation left. Me sad, me very sad. Work promises to be horrible when I get back. Whatever.
