This was a month made for escaping, so that's what I did.

Books finished in July.

1. Mortal Sins by Eileen Wilks

I thought this was a particularly good entry in this series, focusing once again on Lily Yu and Rule Turner. There's murder and mayhem and magical pyrotechnics, and a satisfying emotional development or two for the main characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

2. Demon Night by Meljean Brook

I've liked all of Ms. Brook’s Guardian novels, but this one and Demon Bound were especially good, I thought. The plotting and narrative seemed tighter, though Ms. Brook has always had an amazing breadth of imagination—breathlessly keeping dozens of balls spinning in the air. I really like her main characters, too. She presents complex individuals, richly layered, and satisfying, credible love stories (in a completely paranormal way, of course). I'd love to read more books centered around any of these characters. That's especially true of Ethan and Charlie, the protagonists of this book, and…

3. Demon Bound by Meljean Brook

of Alice and Jake, the protagonists of this one. I think they've been my favorites so far and could quite happily read a series centered around Jake and Alice alone. I was so enamored of Demon Night that I dove right into this one as soon as I'd finished. Sometimes that burns me out on a series for a bit, but not in this case. I was sorry to see it end—except, of course, I wanted to find out what happened. The next book in the Guardian series hasn't come out yet, so I'll have to wait a bit to get my next fix.

Books started in July.

1. Demon Night by Meljean Brook – TBR
2. Demon Bound by Meljean Brook - new
3. Ghost of a Chance by Yasmine Galenorn - new
4. Solstice Wood by Patricia A. McKillip (restart) - TBR

Books purchased in July.

A fairly modest total this month. I've been anxiously waiting a year for The Stars Blue Yonder, the final book in Sandra McDonald's wonderful trilogy, so I sprang for the hardcover.

1. Indian Survival on the California Frontier by Albert L. Hurtado - Amazon seller
2. Darkness Calls by Marjorie M. Liu - B&N
3. The Demon Redcoat by C. C. Finlay - B&N
4. Demon Bound by Meljean Brook – B&N
5. The Stars Blue Yonder by Sandra McDonald - B&N
6. First Blood by Susan Sizemore, Erin McCarthy, Chris Marie Green, Meljean Brook – Amazon seller

Demon Bound is my favorite book by Meljean. I love that one so. And yes, I think I could read an entire series about Jake and Alice. :)
