1. It's a good excuse to read up on some really weird and unsavory topics.

2. It's completely portable. You can take your imagination anywhere you go.

3. You can pretend to be a serial killer without actually having to kill someone.

4. It allows you to keep imaginary friends well into adulthood.

5. When presented with an insoluble mystery, you can solve it. It may not be what really happened, but it could be . . . given the correct alignment of improbable events.

I especially like #3--I keep having to tell people that I'm really not that violent in Real Life (TM). :)

Hahaha, yeah...on the other hand, opening your mouth to share the knowledge you found in point 1. tend to earn you weird looks from other people - unless they are authors themselves. :p

The same when you talk about your characters as if they really exsist.

a big hell yeah on all five! i went to a john brack exhibition recently, and at one point there was a series of paintings featuring his daughters: four daughters at the start of the series, then suddenly only three. two of my friends figured it was something pedestrian like the paintings were displayed out of chronological order and the missing child was just not born yet. my writer and i concocted an elaborate murder hypothesis, complete with evidence from the other paintings about the jealous nature of the older children.

ours was better ;)

Exactly. Imagine if all those scenarios just...never occurred to you. I think that kind of life would qualify as one of the circles of Hell!
