My mom never made the stuff. We only ever had it at other peoples' houses. I can take it or leave it.

It's a glop made with canned pineapple, mandarin oranges, whipped cream, sour cream, and coconut. The grayed out area on top of the poll takes you to the recipe, if you're so inclined.

I'm amazed. I thought it was Southern in origin. I used to love it as a kid, but not so much anymore.

It may be Southern, but we never had it at our house. We went more the sweet potato casserole route loaded up with pecans and marshmallows.

Oh, we did those, too! Those I'll go for anytime because mom makes them from scratch. The ambrosia just seems like one sweet too many for me.

I am a total sucker for all the ingredients and so have really liked it on the rare occasions that I've encountered it. But I can see how it would be the sort of thing that could get real old real fast.

I had no idea it was for Thanksgiving - we can get it year 'round. I love it but don't have it often. (Besides, in a death duel between ambrosia and caramel apple, caramel apple wins.) The yams/sweet potatoes with marshmallows took a bit more fortitude...

You can of course eat in year round, but it tended to show up on most people's Thanksgiving and Xmas tables. My mom used to make it year round. Now, my mom makes her sweet potatoes from scratch with pecans and doesn't make them too sweet—much better. The canned stuff is just abysmal.
