The song oracle
Mar. 19th, 2006 03:28 pmI got this from the irrepressible
merebrillante who got it from the insouciant
cpolk. Since my ambition for the weekend is to do as little as possible relating to work, I decided to do this. (I did manage to go to the garden shop today and buy a beautiful tea tree with lovely papery white blossoms and little pink buds that will look splendid out front opposite the stephanotis on the trellis with its little white flowers. And some herbs for the herb garden out back. But other than that...)
The Oracle
Get your iTunes or mp3 player or whatever and set it to random shuffle, then ask the following questions:
Before we begin, I should say that my iTunes mix is heavily weighted to 60s music at the moment from when I was doing "research" and for mood-setting for the 1968 section of Night Warrior. Hence, the abundance of 60s and Ravi Shankar. (P.S. I also love that music. So sue me.)
1. How does the world see me? - "Go Now," Moody Blues
We've already said
Goodbye
Since you gotta go, oh you'd better
Go now go now, go now (Go now)
Before you see me cry
2. Will I have a happy life? - "Tala Sawari," Ravi Shankar
According to an Indian music site, tala is "the complex rhythmic structures and time cycles" of the music and sawari "lit. 'a touch'". I can see where either of those might lead to a happy life.
3. What do my friends think of me? - "Don't Phunk With My Heart," Black Eyed Peas
Baby, have some trustin', trustin'
When I come in lustin', lustin'
Cause I bring you that comfort
I ain’t only here cause I want ya body
I want your mind too
Interestin’s what I find you
And I'm interested in the long haul
Come on girl (yee-haw)
4. Do people secretly lust after me? - "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself," Dusty Springfield (Burt Bacharach/Hal David)
I just don’t know what to do with my time
I’m so lonesome for you it’s a crime
Going to the movie only makes me sad
Parties make me feel as bad
When I’m not with you
I just don’t know what to do
5. How can I make myself happy? - "I Know A Place," Petula Clark
Don't let the day get the better of you
When the evening comes, there's so much to do
You'd better put on your best and wear a smile
Just come along with me a while
'Cause I tell you
I know a place where the music is fine
And the lights are always low
I know a place where we can go
(I defy anyone not to be happy after listening to that song.)
6. What should I do with my life? - "Night Minds," Missy Higgins
You were blessed by a different kind of inner view: it's all magnified.
The highs would make you fly, and the lows make you want to die.
And I was once there, hanging from that very ledge where you are standing.
So I know
I know
I know,
It's easier to let go.
7. Will I ever have children? - "A White Shade of Pale," Procol Harum
And so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face, at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale
(I laughed so hard.)
8. What is some good advice for me? - "I Feel the Earth Move," Carole King
Oh, darling, when you're near me
And you tenderly call my name
I know that my emotions
Are something that I just can't tame
I've just got to have you, baby
(Works for me.)
9. How will I be remembered? - "Raga Malkauns: II. Jor," Ravi Shankar
Again, with the Indian music site: "Raag Malkauns, one of the six primary raags according to ancient musical texts. It is a late night melody consisting of just five notes: deep, peaceful and sublime in character."
"The Jor section of a raga is based ona rhythmic pulse and does not a have a strict rhythmic timecycle like the Alap."
(Yep, that's me: deep, peaceful, sublime and pulsing.)
10. What's my signature dancing song? - "Raga Malkauns: I. Alap," Ravi Shankar
"Raag Malkauns, one of the six primary raags according to ancient musical texts. It is a late night melody consisting of just five notes: deep, peaceful and sublime in character."
"With an alap, an unhurried note by note exposition of the raag in which the distinctive characteristics of Malkauns are revealed."
(So I guess my signature moves would bear a strong resemblance to that of a temple dancer.)
11. What's my current theme song? - "Time of the Season," The Zombies
It's the time of the season
When the love runs high
In this time, give it to me easy
And let me try
With pleasured hands
To take you and the sun to
Promised lands
To show you every one
It's the time of the season for loving
12. What do others think is my current theme song? - "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine," Country Joe and the Fish
She hides in an attic concealed on a shelf
Behind volumes of literature based on herself
And runs across the pages like some tiny elf
Knowing that it's hard to find
Stuff way back in her mind,
Winds up spending all of her time
Trying to memorize every line
(Harumph.)
13. What shall they play at my funeral? - "Diamonds and Gold," Tom Waits
The broken glass
And the rusty nails
Where the violets grow
Say goodbye to the railroad
And the mad dogs of summer
And everything that I know
(I laughed so hard.)
14. What type of men do I like? - "Raag Khamaj," Ali Akbar Khan
At least it's a really upbeat rhythm.
"The so called 'lighter' Raags such as Khamaj"
15. How's my love life? - "Follow Through," Gavin DeGraw
Oh, this is the start of something good
Don't you agree?
I haven't felt like this in so many moons
You know what I mean?
And I, all I really want is you
You to stick around
I'll see you everyday
But you have to follow through
(My oracle obviously knows something I don't.)
(Unless my roommate had a big secret.)

Date: 2006-03-19 04:03 pm (UTC)And oh Lordy, your children song is just purrrrrfect.
Have you ever heard the original Sweet Lorraine? Especially when sung by Louis Armstrong? If you had it on your iTunes, I bet it would've come up for that question.
