Since the lovely and talented Ms. Elizabeth Bear already did this date, I'll strive to list things she did not. That's part of why I've dithered so long on this. Already listed (and now I'm listing again as a cheat) Ben Jonson's indictment for murder; Nathan Hale's hanging; the last of the accused Salem witches being hanged (a big date for hangings); the emancipation of the slaves; the angel Moroni's visit to Joseph Smith (although I should get that one by default since I actually have Mormon ancestors).
September 22 is a very special day for the communication industry:
* 1869 - Richard Wagner's opera Das Rheingold debuts in Munich.
* 1951 - The first live sporting event seen coast-to-coast in the United States, a college football game between Duke and the University of Pittsburgh, is televised on NBC.
* 1991 - The Dead Sea Scrolls are made available to the public for the first time, by the Huntington Library.
* 1994 - Friends premieres on NBC.
(Okay, I did four. Sue me. How could I pass up such a momentous event as the premiere of Friends?)

* 1961 - Bonnie Hunt, American actress)

And on this day we lost an all-American treasure and a beloved, productive, and irreplaceable immigrant to this country:
* 1989 - Irving Berlin, American songwriter (b. 1888)
