Here's an irony for you: Last night I got home and discovered my replacement book for the incorrect shipment had arrived. I opened it with eager anticipation. Yes, that's right. They'd sent me the same wrong book AGAIN. So I complained to the auto-customer service and this morning I had a note from them saying, "As it seems that the problem with this item is more widespread than we originally thought, we are not able to send another replacement. We will investigate and remedy the situation with the item; however, I cannot guarantee when the error may be fixed."

Yep, so widespread it's happened thrice. I guess the concept of different books in a series is beyond their shipping department, and obviously they've got a glut of this one book in the series and are trying to get rid of it any way they can. :-/ (Yes, yes, I know. It's an extremely busy time of the year for them. I DON'T CARE.)

What's really frustrating is that over the years I've collected each volume in the series as I've gotten spare cash or gift certificates and the one I've been trying to get is the last in the series, the only one I don't have. Perhaps I'll see if Barnes and Noble can do any better. Or perhaps the Universe is trying to tell me something.

Did you know that after two years, Amazon.com just keeps any gift card money you haven't spent? That's kind of... wrong.

That seems to be a trend with a lot of retailers these days. Department stores are doing it. What I think is really insidious is that a lot of retailers start *devaluing* the cards as time passes: after x amount of time they take 10% off or whatever and keep reducing it until it's zero! That sucks big time.

I knitted gifts for all my family, including my brother's two sons. Do you know what my brother sent me (two weeks after Christmas)? A $25 gift card from The Gap. That's right. That's the equivalent of me knitting until my fingers are throbbing, twenty-five dollars worth of sh!t at The F#cking Gap. Next year, they're all getting gift cards, goddammit.

Oh, but I am. I was born in Santa Monica. My ancestors came from the Ozarks and I was raised by a country girl, have numerous country cousins (numerous) but I'm a native. I grew up in Venice, though, the Boho capital of Los Angeles, so that's made me a rather off kilter version of native. I often find myself to be an outsider in my own state. I would never return thoughtful, handmade gifts with a $25 gap gift certificate, for example. :-) That's just ignorant.

I found the whole thing pretty amusing, actually. But I did think I needed to set the record straight, family honor being at stake and all. (That last bit was one of them there ironical statements.)

That's amazing. It would seem that a problem like that should be easy to fix (look up customer's address - find correct book - ship), but then again, they are a big company and probably have some kind of system.
