Random quote of the day:

"It is much more sensible to be an optimist instead of a pessimist, for if one is doomed to disappointment, why experience it in advance?"

—Elizabeth Peters, The Snake, The Crocodile and the Dog

This is the first book in the Amelia Peabody series. I think these books are wonderful, but I don't think they really get rolling until about book #3 in the series, The Mummy Case, when Amelia's son, Rameses, is about four or five and hilariously precocious. This first book is fun but quite lightweight, I think, and obviously written quite fast. Ms. Peters (aka Barbara Mertz, aka Barbara Michaels) is herself an Egyptologist, so she's very reliable when it comes to all things Egyptological.

And to that I would argue, by being a pessimist, there is no such thing as disappointment. :-)
