Burning a hole in my pocket
Dec. 27th, 2005 06:16 pmI have some naughty-but-nice family and friends. They all agreed quite earnestly when I said that we shouldn't exchange presents this year because I couldn't afford gifts and didn't have time to make them. "Yes, yes," they said, "that's the only sensible thing to do."
Almost all of them bought me a present this year.
"But-but-but--" I stuttered.
"We wanted to. Say thank you and shut up."
So I said thank you and shutted up. I am unworthy, but I am very grateful.
Between naughty friends and family, and the gifts two of my bosses give me every year at this time, I reaped the biggest harvest of book certificates ever. Ironic, considering all the books I have left to unpack and all the ones I gave away. But book certificates are the way to my heart. Between 10 p.m. and midnight Christmas night I had an orgy at Amazon. My wish list was decimated. Okay, partially reduced. It's a large wish list.
Today I braved the hordes at Barnes and Noble because a book I ordered before Christmas had arrived--and I took along another gift certificate. Just in case. I wallowed, I'm afraid. I squealed and slurped and wallowed.
And I still have more gifties to go. I'm trying to convince myself to savor it awhile before leaping onto the B&N website, and since I've gotten two major fixes, I may actually succeed in holding onto that last one for a bit.
Not everything I bought was books. I got The Essential Leonard Cohen and a Green Man wall plaque to go with my Zuni fetishes and prayer sticks and Freya statue and the hand-painted glass window with the angel on it I got at Glastonbury in '04. The walls in my rooms are still mostly blank. I want to hang some of my old art work, but I also want to start fresh in some ways. I want to recycle some of the Chinese silk wall hangings I made into some new form, but haven't gotten that together yet. I haven't decided what else to put up. So Green Man will look nice and cheery. He's resin or polymer or something, but I have no prejudice against those media since I used to make polymer sculpture myself.
The book that came with Green Man had a picture of one of the earth sculptures from the Lost Garden of Heligan that I also visited in '04. It could have been a crop of my actual picture of the thing. I know exactly where the photographer must have stood.

Here's the tableaux with Green Man, Freya, the prayer sticks, and the angel window.

Here's a close up of Freya. One of my little polymer pieces is laying there beside her.

Green Man.

And here's my picture of the Green Man earth sculpture at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Cornwall, April 2004.
