A puppy dog morning
Jan. 5th, 2006 08:36 amThis morning was the first in over a week that wasn't cold and wet, the first where I didn't have to scrape my car windows clear of precipitation-tending-towards frost. As a consequence, when I drove in there were a lot more people on the street. And their dogs.
On Washington near the Grand Canal a woman and her weenie dog were having a disagreement. The smartly turned out woman wanted to go one way—towards the French bistro, perhaps?—and the dog was determined to go the other. He dug in his little heels and hung back. So she scooped him up by the belly and ended the discussion. When you're only as big as a minute, it's difficult to win such arguments, but I'm always amazed at how determined little dogs are to assert their will.
Around the corner on Pacific, the golden retriever was much more sanguine. He sat like a good doggie when his mom told him to sit, and he got up and went when she told him to go—and in the direction she wanted, too. He smiled and laughed the whole time, happy to be there.
Further down Pacific an indeterminate breed of short-haired brown and white spotted pup was on a mission. Ears on perked alert, nose and eyes straining forward, he had a serious investigation to conduct. His human stood obediently waiting, leash held indolently, while he concluded his study.
