I'm baffled by their suggestion that pre Conquest North East was prone to demonic possession because so recently converted - am I missing something or are they? I'm thinking Synod of Whitby here.

And I think they've overlooked the terrible situation in post Conquest England (the last book I read about it kept on drawing comparisons with Nazi occupations and apologised for it but said the comparisons imposed themselves). The entire social structure had been overturned by invaders, and it affected everybody, everywhere. Half the nation must have been on the verge of a nervous breakdown; a good comparison might be the early centuries of Spanish rule in Mexico, where again there was a very high incidence not entirely connected with prior beliefs.
