I'm pretty sure I agree with him. I tend not to read short stories unless it's a collection from someone I know is reeeeal good at short stories, like Mr. King himself. His son's not bad either.
I'm not sure if it's laziness on my part, though, or just the fact that I've been burned too many times from loads of crap stories in other collections.
I know what you mean, but even "guaranteed" authors can put out crappy collections or contribute to them. I bought a collection last year that I was excited about because the theme was so danged interesting and a number of authors I liked contributed. I've read about three-quarters of the stories by this time and most, even by trusted authors, were total wastes of time. In fact, there was only one that I'd classify as good. V. disappointing.
I agree with him -- not as the sole reason, but definitely a reason. I know I'm very tentative about taking chances on authors I'm unfamiliar with, and collections of short stories only multiply that.
