We are most ecrtainly going to have to get William Goldman on your list, even if it's only because he wrote The Princess Bride. (Or, should I say, translated and abridged S. Morganstern's version).

Actually, I did own a William Goldman book once--if it's the same William Goldman: Adventures in the Screen Trade. I got it for a screenwriting class during my brief sojourn into madness when I considered selling my soul to the devil and becoming a screenwriter. Fortunately, sanity prevailed--that and the miserable experience of my friend, Stephen, when he sold one of his script. Thanks but no thanks.

If it is the same Mr. Goldman, I'm glad to see he's moved on to a more godly trade. ;-)

Actually, I think we might let it. The movie ends on a happier note, and is actually a little more amusing. But it's always interesting to see the source material, you know?

And being as he also wrote the screenplay for Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, I think he's managed to master both ends of the writing spectrum. :-)

Yes, I'd say he's mastered it. But showbiz is such a skanky business for writers. Stephan rewrote his script five times--a couple of times for the lead actress, once for the producer, a couple of times for the director, then the director and actress took to rewriting it themselves. He wound up with two lines from the original script he sold them and then requested to have his name taken off the project.

Of course, he did get $50,000 for it. So there are compensations. Still, I'm glad I'm not in the Business.

It became a TV-movie starring Cybill Shepherd: Stormy Weathers. It was so bad that when she was doing that comedy series some years back about a less-than-successful actress she actually used scenes from it to parody her own career. Supposedly, the movie was her failed TV series, named something like Big City Cop or something. Anyway, just now when I checked the IMDB (because I couldn't remember the name of the damned thing) I noticed that Stephan's name was listed as one of the writers, so I don't know if he was fibbing about having his name taken off of it or if it was just taken off the screen credits.
