Musings

Kamala Harris was right in the Democratic debate to bring everything back to Trump each time. He's the real enemy here. There were Democrats on that stage who I like better than others but any one of them would be a better president than Donald Trump. But I think I've watched my last debate. I'm sure my Twitter timeline will be relieved, as I couldn’t stop live tweeting. I've watched all the debates so far and my opinion hasn't changed much. I have certain people I'd be quite unhappy to vote for but several of the remaining candidates I'd vote for happily. #AnyDem

An interesting side note: I’ve said uncomplimentary things about several of the candidates but the only time trolls have come after me is when I’ve said uncomplimentary things about Tulsi Gabbard. I am not the only one who has had this experience. And I am such small potatoes on Twitter. They must be very well organized. Good thing I don't respond to trolls. It's no fun for them if you don't engage and they stop playing.

Yes, there are many tragedies in the world we need to pay attention to, but that doesn't mean we can't take a day to remember the murder of nearly 3000 innocent souls. Politicizing that is pretty reprehensible, no matter which side of the debate it comes from. Especially since 9/11 is an ongoing tragedy. People are still dying as a consequence of what happened that day. In honoring the fallen of 9/11 we are also honoring those who still struggle with illness and death because of it.

Dear Everybody Who Needs Money From Me: I'd love to donate to your project/cause/campaign but I'm on a fixed income. Doesn't mean I won't donate when I can but if I donate to one thing I probably won't be able to give to another thing that same month. My sincere best wishes to you.

Even at my advanced age I can still sing all the lyrics of every Beatles song. You never forget the things you memorized in your youth. Unfortunately, this is also true of every commercial jingle I heard when I was young.

Whenever I'm doing a piece of art and I say to myself, "I'll just eyeball it," every time I hear Louis Gossett Jr. saying, "Don't be eyeballin' me, boy." Every. Fricking. Time.

I was reading about the psychological theory of behaviorism one afternoon, but each time the notifications rang on my phone I picked it up to look. The irony of this was not lost on me.

I hit the wall of character motivation on the novel and had a painful slog trying to get through it. I wasn’t believing this character's reason for acting as he does so I couldn’t expect anyone else would. I did a partial re-read and reorganization to see if that would shake anything loose and after some reworking I came unstuck—at least for that particular problem. I'm not sure that part of the novel works, but it works for now, and I'm moving forward.

But not quickly. I pushed through a major hump a few days ago so at least that section of the story is finished. I’m past the 90k mark and closing in on the end of the book, but I still have a ways to go. I’ve never worked well from outlines. They usually kill an idea dead for me. Part of the problem with the current novel is that I know everything that happens until the end rather than making it up as I go along and that’s turned it into a real slog. However, I feel I have to finish this one, not only because I’ve come so far, but for the sake of my own spirit. I need to finish a substantial piece of work. To prove something to myself, I guess. That I’m still a writer?

I look forward to typing The End and putting this one in the trunk for a while and moving on to something else. It’s not my best work. Most writers I know feel that way at the conclusion of a novel, but in this case I may be write. Er, right.

Until I reread it many months hence, of course, and temporarily suffer from the “this is the best thing I’ve ever done” delusion.

Yes, I know. There are so many charities asking for your financial support these days. But here's a chance to save some lovely wilderness and an iconic bit of Hollywood history. We only have until April 30 to do it.

Photobucket

Howard Hughes originally bought Cahuenga Peak, the land on which the Hollywood sign sits, to build a mansion for Ginger Rogers, but when they broke up, he let the land sit there, as he did so many of his plots of land around L.A. That's why a number of them, like Ballona Wetlands and the Cahuenga Peak, have been saved from the rapaciousness of developers. In 2002, the Hughes estate decided to sell off the Peak. The city of Los Angeles and the Trust for Public Land wanted to buy it and save the land in its wilderness state, making it a part of Griffith Park, the large wilderness area inside the city. But the Hughes estate was asking a whopping $22 million dollars. L.A. and the Trust tried to raise that much, but were unable to, and a group of Chicago vultures swooped in with a plan to build butt-ugly McMansions on the site. The bottom fell out of the real estate market, as you may know, and the Chicago syndicate couldn't march forward with their plans. Another chance arose to save the site, at the now "reasonable" price of $12.5 million dollars. The Trust for Public Land, some big donors inside and outside of Hollywood, plus a lot of little Jo/Joe Average donors have managed to raise $11, but the deadline for raising that other $1.5 million is April 30. One of the big donors has put up another $500k as a matching fund, so every donation from the public is worth that much extra.

From the Trust for Public Land site:

Individuals may donate online at www.savehollywoodland.org, or with their cell phones by texting the word LAND to the number 50555 to give $5. When prompted, reply with YES to confirm the gift. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.

Here's the pitch:

By clicking on this site you can help feed neglected and abused animals.

"This is pretty simple... Please ask ten friends to each ask a further ten today!

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting FREE FOOD donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals for free'. This doesn't cost you a thing.

Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Please pass it along to people you know."

According to Snopes this is a legitimate site. It's run by CharityUSA which is not a non-profit, but they do donate a significant amount of their profit to the charities they claim to support. Advertisers donate on a per click basis for the chance to have people see their ads and for the good PR.

I didn't find out about the 911 Day of Service until the drive home from work on September 11. I wished I'd known sooner, but as I sat there Friday night doing my yearly night of watching about 911 on TV, I decided that I had to do something. I don't know what yet, but it's a more positive thing to do with all that grief and anger.

Service. It's a beautiful word that has recently been treated with disdain in certain quarters. All service means is thinking of someone besides yourself, doing something outside the narrow corners of your interest, the box you have placed your life in. It doesn't have to be a huge thing. Small acts of kindness add up, random bits of niceness help change the face of the vast mosaic of life. Anything that one does without personal gain being the motive is an act of service.

I hope I'm a good enough person to serve something larger than Me.

If you interpret "the week of 911" as beginning with September 11, I've still got until Friday to "perform a good deed, volunteer or engage in another charitable activity."

Because I believe the best good deeds are done anonymously, I may not report on anything here. Service of another kind, volunteering and the like, are another issue. I don't know if I'll get any "service" done this year, but I see no reason not to plan something next year.
