Random quote of the day:

“Talent is a question of quantity. Talent does not write one page: it writes three hundred. No novel exists which an ordinary intelligence could not conceive; there is no sentence, no matter how lovely, that a beginner could not construct. What remains is to pick up the pen, to rule the paper, patiently to fill it up.”

—Jules Renard, Journal, 1887 (ed. & tr. Louise Bogan and Elizabeth Roget)

Random quote of the day:

“In a creative writing class of twenty people anywhere in this country, six students will be startlingly talented. Two of those might actually publish something by and by. [What distinguishes those two from the rest is that] they will have something other than literature itself on their minds. They will probably be hustlers, too. I mean that they won’t want to wait passively for somebody to discover them. They will insist on being read.”

Random quote of the day:

“I bawled [my sister] out one time for not doing more with the talents she had. She replied that having talent doesn’t carry with it the obligation that something has to be done with it. This was startling news to me. I thought people were supposed to grab their talents and run as far and fast as they could.”

Random quote of the day:

“Goethe said, “Talent is developed in privacy,” you know?  And it’s really true.  There is a need for aloneness which I don’t think most people realize for an actor.  It’s almost having certain kinds of secrets for yourself that you’ll let the whole world in on only for a moment, when you’re acting.”

Random quote of the day:

“Use the talents you possess, for the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except the best.”

—Anonymous, The Ladies Repository, September 1874

This quote has been widely misattributed to Henry Van Dyke (and sometimes to Thoreau).  In actual fact, the first known use of it was in The Ladies Repository: A Monthly Periodical, Devoted to Literature, Arts, and Religion, September 1874.  It was used without attribution.

Random quote of the day:

"The ability to spell correctly is a talent, not an acquirement. There is some dignity about an acquirement, because it is a product of your own labor. It is wages earned, whereas to be able to do a thing merely by the grace of God and not by your own effort transfers the distinction to our heavenly home—where possibly it is a matter of pride and satisfaction but it leaves you naked and bankrupt."

—Mark Twain, The Autobiography of Mark Twain

Random quote of the day:

"We are always more anxious to be distinguished for a talent which we do not possess than to be praised for the fifteen which we do possess."

Anyone who's read more than a couple of these blog entries probably figured that out already, but I'm confirming it anyway. I recently said to someone, "LosCon is only about five miles from my house. I'd be a dweeb not to attend."

It's this weekend. I even bought a membership. But here's the thing: I'm tired. I haven't had serious downtime in awhile, and I'm so looking forward to serious downtime—some sleeping in late, some reading, some writing, some playing with kitty wooboo, maybe assemble the étagère I bought, tear down the lopsided cabinet in the bathroom, put the étagère in its place...that sort of thing. And I really would like to find the sofa again. I haven't seen it since about Worldcon, I don't think. Most of the crap they gave me in the con package has been laying there since, as well as accumulated crap from other sources. And kitty wooboo is not amused. It's gotten so bad I even covered up her favorite pillow. She looks accusingly at me. I am shamed.

So, yes, I'm a dweeb.

Poll redux: After posting yesterday's poll I realized I'd forgotten the most important ticky option of them all:

If I became rich and famous I would...

❏ ask myself, "What would Oprah do?"

(Not a real ticky, but an amazing simulation.)

Random quotes of the day:

"We may not pay Satan reverence, for that would be indiscreet, but we can at least respect his talents."

—Mark Twain

"Fiction holds a tremendous amount of truth, and of course that's one of those lovely ironies because it's all made up. You tell lie after lie till you get to the truth."

—Connie Willis, interview in Locus magazine, January 2003

I recently syndicated the lit agent Kristen Nelson as [livejournal.com profile] pubrants. And this morning I syndicated Miss Snark as [livejournal.com profile] miss_snark, as I discovered the previous syndication had somehow evaporated.

I was also glad to see that someone syndicated [livejournal.com profile] postsecrets, one of my favorite Sunday morning pleasures which now I can read on my flist. Check it out if you get a chance.

That is all.

And repeat to yourself:

"Failure isn't trying and not achieving. Failure is not trying. Failure is letting your fear rule your actions. Suck it up. Wasting your talent is not ok."-- Miss Snark

Quote of the day:

"Never have I thought that I was the happy possessor of a 'talent;' my sole concern has been to save myself by work and faith."

—Jean-Paul Sartre

I'm sorry, Monsieur Sartre, were you saying something?
